iWind Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 27, 2026
This policy explains how iWind handles information when you use its iPhone, Android phone, Apple Watch, and Wear OS apps, including supported watch-face complications. iWind is provided by Randy Casburn ("we," "us," or "our"). Features and service providers may differ by platform and app version. The descriptions below apply when you use the corresponding feature. This policy covers the apps, not the separate data practices of websites you visit through app links.
For privacy questions or requests concerning information held by us, use the iWind support form and identify your request as a privacy or data-deletion request. Please do not send passwords, authentication tokens, or access codes.
Information we handle and why
Tempest account information
You sign in using an existing WeatherFlow/Tempest account, including supported lifestyle services such as iKitesurf, iWindsurf, WindAlert, SailFlow, and FishWeather. iWind sends your username and password to WeatherFlow/Tempest to authenticate you and obtain a session token. The app uses that token to request your account's profiles, favorite stations, weather information, and other supported account features.
The phone app stores your username and an encrypted session token so you can remain signed in. It does not save your password in its own persistent app storage. If you choose to save or retrieve a password through your device’s password manager or credential service, your selected credential provider manages that saved password under its own settings and privacy policy.
iWind does not create a separate iWind login account. Creating, renaming, or deleting profiles and favorite stations can update information in your WeatherFlow/Tempest account, rather than changing only a local display.
Location, searches, and maps
With your permission, iWind accesses your phone's or watch's location for features such as searching for nearby weather stations or showing your position on radar maps. Location may be precise or approximate, depending on your permission settings and device. The app can use a recent device location or request a current location.
Nearby station searches send coordinates and search parameters to WeatherFlow/Tempest. Address and place searches send the text you enter, selected place information, and, when available, a geographic search bias to the search provider used by that feature, such as Google Places or Apple’s mapping services. Selected search coordinates may then be sent to WeatherFlow/Tempest to find weather stations.
Maps are provided by the mapping service used on your platform, such as Google Maps or Apple Maps. RainViewer receives requests for radar imagery for the displayed area. Open-Meteo receives the coordinates of a selected weather station when used for fallback forecasts. A weather station's coordinates are not necessarily your device's location. Map and radar requests can reveal the geographic area you are viewing.
Location access is used for the location-dependent features you enable. Station-based watch complications request weather for the selected station rather than requiring your current GPS location. You can deny or revoke location permission and still use features that do not need your current location, such as viewing selected stations.
Profiles, preferences, and cached weather
iWind stores selected profiles and stations, display preferences, measurement units, onboarding status, and cached weather information on your devices to provide the app's features and reduce repeated loading. Weather information includes station locations, observations, and forecasts. Settings and cached information may remain between app sessions.
Subscriptions and complimentary access
Apple’s App Store or Google Play processes subscription purchases and payments, depending on where you subscribe. iWind uses purchase information provided by the applicable store, such as transaction records or purchase tokens, product information, and subscription status, to verify access, complete purchase processing, and restore subscriptions. iWind does not receive your full payment-card details from the app store.
Where complimentary access codes are supported, if you redeem a code, iWind validates its digital signature and stores the code locally. The code includes a grant identifier and may include an expiration date. It is also synchronized to the watch to enable access. Redeeming a code does not cancel an existing subscription.
Phone-to-watch synchronization
iWind uses the companion-device communication services available on your platform to exchange information between the phone and watch apps. On Android and Wear OS, this includes Google’s Wear OS Data Layer. This includes the Tempest session token, selected profiles and stations, preferences, cached weather, subscription-access status and verification times, and any complimentary access code. The session token lets the watch request weather directly from the relevant services. Your Tempest password is not included in the companion synchronization payload.
Depending on the platform and connection, synchronization may use platform-provider infrastructure; for example, Wear OS synchronization may use Google Play services when a direct device connection is unavailable. Information can remain on the watch while the phone is disconnected. A selected station's wind speed and direction may appear on your watch face if you add an iWind complication.
Technical information and support
Services contacted by the apps receive network information such as your IP address and request details. When Google Maps or Places is used, its SDKs also process device and SDK information, diagnostic and crash information, and SDK-specific identifiers to operate, maintain, and improve Google's services. Depending on the feature, Google also processes map interactions and search inputs or geographic parameters. See Google's privacy policy. Apple services used by the app handle information under Apple’s privacy policy.
The app writes operational and error messages to device diagnostic logs. If you choose to send a support request, we receive the contact details, message, attachments, and diagnostic information you provide, and use them to investigate and respond. Avoid including sensitive information that is not needed for your request.
The iWind apps do not include advertising or a separate developer-operated behavioral analytics SDK. This does not mean that the third-party services described above collect no technical or usage information.
Who receives information
Information is sent to the providers needed for the features you use:
- WeatherFlow/Tempest: account authentication, account profiles and favorites, station searches, and weather services. See the Tempest privacy policy.
- Apple: App Store purchases and subscriptions, and Apple platform services used for mapping, credentials, or companion-device communication, as applicable. See Apple’s privacy policy.
- Google: Google Play billing, Maps, Places, and companion-device communication through Google Play services. If you select Google as your credential provider, Google also manages saved credentials. See Google's privacy policy. Use of Google Maps features is also subject to the Google Maps/Google Earth additional terms.
- RainViewer: radar coverage and imagery requests for the area displayed. See the RainViewer website for its current privacy information.
- Open-Meteo: station-coordinate forecast requests. See Open-Meteo's terms and privacy information.
- Your chosen credential provider: passwords you elect to save or retrieve through your device’s password manager or credential service.
- Support service providers: information you submit when requesting help or exercising privacy rights.
These providers handle information under their applicable policies and terms. Their systems may process information in countries other than where you live. We do not sell your personal information or use it to serve targeted advertising. Information held by us may also be disclosed when required by applicable law or a valid legal request.
Storage, retention, and security
The apps retain local account-session information while it is needed for sign-in, and retain preferences and cached weather until replaced, cleared by the app, or removed through device settings. Cached content does not have a guaranteed automatic deletion deadline. Complimentary access codes remain on the phone until removed or the app's data is cleared; signing out of Tempest does not itself remove the phone's complimentary grant.
The apps use platform security mechanisms to protect stored session information. On Android and Wear OS, session tokens are encrypted using Android Keystore-backed encryption. On Android and Wear OS, authentication preferences and complimentary-code preferences on the phone, and the watch’s synchronization preferences, are excluded from the apps’ configured backup and device-transfer rules. Backup and restoration behavior varies by platform and device settings. Preferences and cached app data may be included in operating-system backups.
Connections to the external weather and map services use HTTPS. Companion synchronization uses the communication services provided by the relevant device platform. These measures help protect information, but no storage or transmission system can guarantee absolute security.
Information held by WeatherFlow/Tempest, Apple, Google, other service providers, your credential provider, or your backup provider is subject to their retention practices. Clearing iWind's local data does not automatically erase their records. We retain support correspondence as needed to address the request and related follow-up, and to meet applicable legal obligations; you can request deletion using the privacy contact above.
Your choices and deletion requests
- Location: change iWind’s location permissions in your phone or watch settings. Some nearby-search or location-centered map features will then be unavailable.
- Local app data: on Android and Wear OS, use the app’s system storage controls to clear storage/data, or uninstall the app. On iPhone and Apple Watch, delete the app using the device’s app-management controls; offloading an iPhone app keeps its documents and data. Sign out first to clear the app’s saved session. Do this separately on both phone and watch to remove local copies from both devices. If another installed companion app still has your account information, it may synchronize that information again. Backup copies, if any, are managed through your backup provider's controls.
- Sign-in information: signing out clears the phone app's saved session and local account/weather state. For complete local removal from a disconnected watch, sign out or remove the watch app’s data separately using the controls available on that platform. Passwords saved by a credential provider must be removed through that provider.
- Complimentary access: where available, use the phone app’s access-code management controls to remove a redeemed code (on Android: Settings → Subscription → Manage access code → Remove access code). Removal synchronizes to the watch when the devices can communicate. You can instead clear app data on each device.
- Tempest account and server-side data: signing out, clearing app data, or uninstalling iWind does not delete your WeatherFlow/Tempest account or its saved profiles and favorites. Contact WeatherFlow/Tempest support to request deletion of the account or information they hold. We cannot directly delete an account controlled by WeatherFlow/Tempest.
- Subscriptions: cancel or manage your subscription with the store where you purchased it: Apple subscription management or Google Play subscriptions. Uninstalling iWind, removing an access code, or requesting data deletion does not cancel recurring billing.
- Information held by us: use the iWind support form to request access, correction, or deletion of support information or other personal information you have provided to us. We may need to verify your request. Where retention is required by law, we will explain the applicable limitation.
Depending on your location, you may have additional rights concerning your personal information, including rights to object to or restrict processing or complain to a privacy regulator. Contact us through the support form to make a request concerning information we control. Contact the relevant service provider for information it controls.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the apps or their data practices change. The current version will be available through the privacy-policy link in the app, with its revision date. Where required, we will provide additional notice or request consent for material changes.
